Charles Coulson Rich was born on August 21, 1809, in Campbell County, Kentucky. He was instructed in the Mormon faith by Lyman Wight and baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by George M. Hinckle in 1832. In 1838 he married Sarah D. Pea, the first of his six wives. Rich lived in Calfwell County, Missouri, and fought in the Battle of Crooked River. The Nauvoo Legion was a city militia created by act of the Illinois legislature in 1841. Joseph Smith was lieutenant general and John C. Bennett was initially major general.
